This post will be dedicated to my review of Sonic 3 film. It’s going to be a completely spoiler free review as I only want to say a few words about the special effects, the best part of the film, and my thoughts on how the plot was developed. These are the aspects that stood out for me the most while I was watching the film. Overall, I find it to be a very nice progression of the main plot and it definitely looks like the best part yet, especially in comparison to the second one which was a bit too cringey and politically heavy for me.

CGI Characters still look strange

To begin with, I wanted to point out that the CGI in this film though looks great and believable, somehow seemed worse that before to me. It should be taken into consideration, though, that it’s the first of three Sonic films that I have watched in the cinema, the first two I’ve only seen online.

Consequently, it may have been harder to spot on a smaller screen but the models in the third film seem to have a different hair texture with much more prominent single hairs that stick out. It looked a bit over detailed for me. However, looking at the high resolution pictures from the two film, I’d say that the reason was less screen time for Sonic previously. Either way, the model looks cluttered which doesn’t look “natural” if this word even suites here.

Other than that there were a couple of scenes with actors which included explosions, and those scenes looked like they were definitely cast over the green screen. It felt like if you squint your eyes just enough, you’ll be able to see it. I do not recall such scenes previously.

Regardless, I could spot it only a couple of times during the film, so it didn’t bother me, I just made a mental note of its existence.

Jim Carrey Carries

He is undoubtedly the star of the show and I enjoyed every scene with him. His body plasticity and face mimicry is incredible and his moves are generally fascinating to watch. The rest of the human cast did well, but no one shines like Mr Carrey.

If I have to mention someone else from the cast, it would be Lee Majdoub as agent Stone. His addition to the plot brought to light the very role of a villain’s sidekick and he brilliantly played his devotion to Dr. Robotnik.

I can also point out that the expressions of the CGI models were great but I cannot talk about the English voice actors since I live in Spain right now and watched the film in Spanish.

Cheese for everyone

This part of the review is about the story and I say it again, it’s spoiler free. In general, there is only one thing I would like to talk about in regards to the plot of the film: I could see how the scene would play out from it’s very setup most of the time. It didn’t make the execution worse, though. I enjoyed every cliche and every cheesy moment in the film because they looked rather natural and not forced.

Yes, sometimes it was way on the nose but the scene itself most of the time demanded these cliches, so at least they were justifiable.

On the other note, it doesn’t mean that the film was completely predictable and many times action was engaging enough for me to forget about the predictions and just enjoy the show.

All in all, I came to the cinema to see Knuckles, Shadow and Jim Carrey. The film delivered all three and I am very satisfied. I’m also very satisfied that the film doesn’t follow any strict character trait cliches. I mean, Knuckles is not just a muscle man with no brain even if it may seem like that at first glance. Also Tails is not typical nerd who cannot do anything outside a computer. I guess, I don’t need to say why Shadow is a good character, at least fans of the franchise know that and the rest can find out in this movie.

As a closing remark I want to note that you don’t need to know what was in the first two film to follow the plot of this one. Here’s why: the first film introduced Sonic, Robotnik and the human family which adopted Sonic, the second film introduced Knuckles. That’s it. It’s all that you need to know about their plots to follow this one. Also, Sonic has golden rings that act as teleports. The rest of details are not plot relevant, so don’t be afraid if you haven’t seen the first films. This one is the best of them, so I definitely recommend it.
